  Calder?n's challenge: Confronting monopolies
-- January 24, 1:29 PM

For President Felipe Calder?n, though, the "tortilla wars" could ultimately portend something much larger. He campaigned as the "jobs president," but if history is to grant him that title, he faces tough economic reforms ahead. Economists say loosening the tight grip that business elites have on the economy should be near the top of the list for a country that is losing position globally ? in no small part because of the economic concentration that keeps competition down and prices high.

Wealth gap tests Mexico's conservative new leader
-- January 24, 1:21 PM

To stem a growing restlessness among the nation's poor ? almost half of the population ? Mexico's new president Felipe Calder?n faces the delicate balance of tackling poverty's roots while also addressing its symptoms. He has moved quickly to promise aid for some of the most fundamental problems facing the poor, targeting everything from drinkable water to health services and schools. But Mr. Calder?n has made it equally clear that none of that will matter unless social order is maintained, showing a firm hand that some have interpreted to mean disruptive protests will no longer be tolerated.

Chinese parents win back their daughter
-- January 23, 9:35 PM

A Chinese couple who lost custody of their baby daughter after putting her in what they said was temporary foster care with an American family won their heartbreaking, seven-year legal battle Tuesday to get her back.

In a unanimous decision, the Tennessee Supreme Court said a Memphis judge wrongly took away the Chinese couple's parental rights. The high court said the couple were penalized because they did not understand the American legal system and thought they were giving up their daughter temporarily so she could get health insurance.

Cuban senator picked to lead GOP
-- January 22, 12:06 PM

WASHINGTON - Florida Sen. Mel Martinez on Friday took the helm of a national Republican Party splintered over illegal immigration, vowing to reach out to black, Latino and "all communities that may have never believed that Republican ideals spoke to them."

President Bush's selection of Martinez sparked a backlash from border-state Republicans and other conservatives who oppose the Cuba-born Martinez's embrace of proposed immigration revisions that they consider "amnesty."

FB schools have different view of immigrants
-- January 22, 12:04 PM

FARMERS BRANCH ? On a recent Friday afternoon, a kindergarten class of white, black and Latino children stands in a circle, laughing and singing the hokeypokey in Spanish.

American and Mexican flags hang side by side on the wall at Janie Stark Elementary. The class is part of a pilot dual-language program that teaches students half the day in English and half in Spanish.

In many ways, the Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district is at odds with the path the city of Farmers Branch is taking with its recent measures targeting illegal immigrants.

Racial attacks by gangs rising, L.A. officials fear
-- January 22, 11:55 AM

The headlines are among the most stark documenting gang violence. A Latino gang member, without saying a word, guns down a 14-year-old black girl standing on a sidewalk. A black gang member shoots a Latino toddler point-blank in the chest.

For the most part, though, the role racial animosity has played in gang crime has gone unexamined, largely undocumented in crime statistics and often tamped down by politicians and law enforcement officials anxious about inflaming tensions.

  Study identifies Hispanic dynamics
-- January 22, 11:53 AM

While few would dispute that Hispanics are a fast-growing piece of West Michigan, a new study underlines another trait.

It is a widely diverse community, one that spans many cultures and ranges from poverty and high school dropouts to those who are college-educated and living in prosperity.

  Immigration Law Triggers Threat
-- January 22, 11:49 AM

A Washington-based Hispanic civil rights group is threatening a lawsuit against Beaufort County unless the county repeals the controversial illegal immigration ordinance it approved last month.

The Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, which has successfully fought laws targeting immigrants in New York and New Jersey, sent a letter to county officials Wednesday citing concerns about the legality of the measure and the potential for civil rights violations. The group said it was acting on behalf of local Hispanic leaders, attorneys and business owners.

Labor Groups, Business Seek Immigration Law Overhaul
-- January 22, 11:38 AM

Worried that surprise raids are driving away workers who are their lifeblood, businesses are pooling their money and joining unusually broad alliances that include labor unions and civil rights groups to push Congress to overhaul the nation's immigration laws.

The coalition Alliance for Immigration Reform 2007 announced its formation this week, placing the force of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Service Employees International Union and the nation's largest Hispanic civil rights group behind a unified lobbying effort to get a law passed before the politics of the 2008 presidential campaign make a compromise on the contentious issue unworkable.

With Calder?n in, a new war on Mexico's mighty drug cartels
-- January 22, 11:08 AM

...part of President Felipe Calder?n's massive military effort to crack down on one of Mexico's most entrenched problems: drug trafficking and organized crime. But as most of the helicopters pulled away, the sight of soldiers pulling up remaining plants one by one in this tiny field ? one of 38 in this isolated region alone ? underscored the enormity of targeting Mexico's vast illicit drug trade, which includes poppy fields, meth labs, and cash-flush criminals who control entire communities.

Judge Demands To Know Whereabouts Of ICE Suspects
-- January 14, 1:03 PM

DENVER, Colo. -- A federal judge demanded Friday that immigration officials disclose the whereabouts of 265 people arrested in a raid at a meatpacking plant in Greeley last month.

U.S. District Judge John L. Kane gave Immigration and Customs Enforcement until Jan. 22 to submit a list accounting for all the detainees, including those who have been deported.

"There are people in custody -- there is an urgency to this," Kane said.

Pizza promotion met with death threats
-- January 12, 8:11 AM

DALLAS, Texas (AP) -- A pizza chain has been hit with death threats and hate mail after offering to accept Mexican pesos, becoming another flashpoint in the nation's debate over immigrants.

"This is the United States of America, not the United States of Mexico," one e-mail read. "Quit catering to the damn illegal Mexicans," demanded another.

Dallas-based Pizza Patron said it was not trying to inject itself into a larger political debate about illegal immigration when it posted signs this week saying "Aceptamos pesos" -- or "We accept pesos" -- at its 59 stores across Texas, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada and California.

Top 10 things you need to know about Latino women
-- January 10, 2:42 PM

Woman are something else. We can give birth, which is a miracle to me, but it's hard for some women to comprehend other women.

We may be understanding, but to understand the other is a different story. We can be territorial and demanding - two necessary qualities to survive, but not to make new friends.

I do some work as a Spanish tutor. The other day, the mother of one of my Spanish students asked me, "You know what? We were talking about the different ways woman behave, and we don't know a thing about Latino women."

-- January 9, 8:10 AM

To succeed with his plan to extend health care to 6.5 million uninsured Californians, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will have to find common ground between groups that often are at odds.

...

Under the proposal, all Californians must have insurance, although the poorest will be subsidized. Those who go uncovered will be subject to tax penalties.

-- January 8, 2:22 PM

Starting Monday, patrons of the Dallas-based Pizza Patr?n chain, which caters heavily to Latinos, will be able to purchase American pizzas with Mexican pesos.

Restaurant experts and economists said they knew of no other food chain with locations so far from the Mexican border offering such a service.
