Immigrants, Including “Illegal Aliens” in California, Have Much Lower Crime Rate than the Rest of Us
Submitted by Tony Cheek

By Frank D. Russo

A study released today by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) should lay to rest the myth that immigrants, including those who are here in California illegally, are responsible for crime waves. In fact, it is just the opposite of what some xenophobes would have you believe when they try to whip up fears about crime from those who cross over from Mexico to California. Even amongst this group, the rate of criminal activities is substantially lower than those who are native born Americans.

“Crime, Corrections, and California: What Does Immigration Have to Do with it?” , based on U.S. Census data, looks at the data from multiple points of view and probes for a different outcome. But in 26 pages of rigorous analysis, this is what the authors conclude:

• People born outside the United States make up about 35 percent of California’s adult population but represent only about 17 percent of the state prison population.

• U.S.-born adult men are incarcerated in state prisons at rates up to 3.3 times higher than foreign-born men.

• Among men ages 18-40 – the age group most likely to commit crime – those born in the United States are 10 times more likely than immigrants to be in county jail or state prison.

• Noncitizen men from Mexico ages 18-40 – a group disproportionately likely to have entered the United States illegally – are more than 8 times less likely than U.S.-born men in the same age group to be in a correctional setting (0.48% vs. 4.2%).

• California cities with a higher share of recent immigrants have lower property and violent crime rates than in those with fewer immigrants.

What does a vote for McCain mean?
Submitted by Nena
Saturday, 16 February 2008

Reading all the hub bub against Senator McCain, I've come to realize that everyone is upset, pro-immigration organizations and anti-Hispanic/immigration organizations.  The reason for the sudden hysteria over at the anti camp is due to the uncertainty of their votes.

While its true McCain produced a comprehensive immigration bill and stretched his frale arms across aisles to capture his audience and even LULACs favor....its also true that the bill contained harsh punishment and captivity for the undocumented people.

Then there are the anti-s, who refer to McCain as McAmnesty.  If the antis could link amnesty to every bill in the house, then the Repanderers will make sure that the bill does not pass the floor.  Even though it is clearly not amnesty.

A vote for McCain brings one sentiment for sure - UNCERTAINTY.  McCain has a responsibility of keeping his party content.  On the other hand he is unpredictable.  What I don't want and what I don't need is 4 more years of uncertainty.  The concentration camps are being built with such force and used against innocent people.

I hope Obama can REALLY change the climate.

Time is of the essence!

The Lost City of Caral
Submitted by Tony Cheek
Saturday, 29 December 2007

Ancient civilizations all seem to have one thing in common - a need to protect the populace from warring tribes. This need to protect the tribe is what brought people together in vast city-states, creating complex infrastructures with powerful hierarchies.

Image Ask any Archaeologist: just when a theory starts gelling into a fact, a monkey wrench emerges and screws it all up.

Such is the Ancient City of Caral: ignored for centuries as "just a bunch of hills in the desert," Caral became the focal point of a major archeological find of this very young century: those "hills" were actually enourmous pyramids, the largest of which stretches over fifteen football fields in length.

This edition of the BBC's Horizons show documents the findings dicovered from this complex of pyramids, and the monkey wrenches it tosses into conventional archaeological wisdom.

video follows the break.

National Latino Vote Expected to Top 9 Million in 2008
Submitted by Tony Cheek
Friday, 21 December 2007

from contactomagazine.com:

The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute at the University of Southern California projects that 9.3 million Latino voters will go to the polls in the 2008 presidential elections. That is an increase of over 1.7 million voters or an increase of approximately 23% compared to 2004.

"As the U.S. Latino population surges, we are seeing increases in registration and voter turnout due to increased naturalization numbers by Latino immigrants beginning in the 1990s and Latino youth coming of voting age" said Harry Pachon, Ph.D., President of TRPI.

The potential impact of a Latino voting bloc is particularly high in states with large concentrations of Latinos. For instance, in California, it takes a mere 3.1% of Latino voters to cause a 1% shift in the state's presidential election results. Similarly, in Florida only 4.5% of Latino voters are needed to create a 1% statewide shift in the vote.

Even in non-traditional Latino states, such as Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Washington, we will see thousands of new Latino voters in 2008. Rudy de la Garza, TRPI Vice President, notes however that, "even with such substantial increases, Latinos must significantly increase their rates of registration and voting in order to influence the election's results".

Founded in 1985, the Tomás Rivera Policy Institute (TRPI) advances informed policy on key issues affecting Latino communities through objective and timely research contributing to the betterment of the nation. TRPI is an affiliated research unit of the University of Southern California School of Policy, Planning, and Development and is associated with the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy at Columbia University.
